OPEN FILM & PERFORMANCE NIGHTS

On Tuesday and Wednesday next week, we shall be hosting an Open Film Night and Open Performance Night respectively. We do not discriminate any type of work/work in progress, we aim to serve as a platform.
There is a BRING YOUR OWN WORK policy, so just bring your stuff along!
These will both take place at faber studios from 8pm.

Luke Howlin will be available to discuss any queries in LSAD, Clare Street, in the main corridor this Thursday 13th May between 12.30 and 2.30 or email at

Make and Do presents COPYLEFT

Our group show is opening on Monday 17th May at 8pm and running till Wednesday 19th May in FABER Studios on Catherine Street, Limerick.

The collective are presenting a fresh approach to the standard group show by collaborating under the concept of copyleft. Copyleft subverts the term copyright by questioning notions of authorship, appropriation and freedom of information.

Further Events
Open Film Night on Tuesday 18th May at 8pm. Presenting a selection of shorts. All welcome to bring work on DVD/USB format, time limit 10mins negotiable.

Open Performance Night on Wednesday 19th May at 8pm. All welcome to perform. Including Limerick’s first and only experimental art choir ‘Oscar Mike + Der Kunsthummers’ with their debut concert.

Exhibition and additional nights are completely free to the public.

COLLABORATION-

hey all, how does anyone feel about being ever MORE collaborative. As in, several people creating one piece of art. We could split the group into 3 or 4 subgroups dictated by what people are interested in. This would mean the exhibition would showcase only 3, 4 or 5 pieces. Or would anyone be interested in making just 1 installation (between us) maybe being made up of smaller elements of our own work.
We could:
- split ourselves up by shared conceptual interests - (e.g. identity, reality, memory, etc)?
- split ourselves up by media interests - ( e.g. video+photography, 3-D, 2-D, performance etc)?
- split ourselve at random (names out of a hat) into groups of 2, 3, 4 or 5?
- split into just 2 groups?
- or just create 1 piece.
anywho just an idea (I shall be bringing it up on the tuesday we come back), since its a small space for 15 people. And it could be an interesting challenge.

FABER STUDIOS!!!!!!

Hey everyone! just an update (my sincerest apologies for the delay) with regards to the emergnecy meeting we held on thursday!!!!
So thanks to Paula and the Space committee we got the opportunity to hold our exhibition in Faber studios. It was important we make a decision and get back to Chris with a yes or no, and so after some debate all who attended were in agreement it was an opportunity not to miss! We said yes!! So, WE HAVE A SPACE!!!! On monday May 10th, the second chapter of the Make and Do Society will open to the public in Faber Studios!
Because of the nature of the space some issues arose, and they are detailed below, along with the solutions and conclusions we came to.
For anyone who doesn't know the space it is in the large glass building, roughly across from Silkes, and it is the space where some past sculpture students can be seen working through the glass windows.
The main concern was with the size of the space, both wall space and floor space, with special regard to opening night and space for the public to move and see the work.
The solutions are as follows....the opening will be held outside as there is plenty of pavement area, and this will make the best use of the huge window space. Also it will minimise the amount of people in the space at any one time so that there is plenty of space to view the work.
We spent some time discusing whether or not it is feasible to present the work of fifteen people in this space and decided with some creativity and enthuasiasm it could be a brilliant challenge for us, and fantastic way to up our game from last year! So we will all have to be very aware of what everyone is doing/planning for the space, and all work very closely together.
Thus we plan to meet every tuesday, starting the first week back, for an hour or so, and eventually we will have to have one or two much longer meetings to really get into the details of how this will work and what everyone plans to make for the space, and how it can all work/fit together.
As usual, if I have left anything out or forgotten anything, if I have misinformed, or if anyone has any comments or questions please fell free to leave a comment or edit this one by logging in please feel free to do so, either here or on the facebook!
Also, please spread the word, and continue to check here for any updates or comments!!
thanks....hope everyone enjoys the easter!

Yesterday's Meeting

So we had a meeting yesterday and discovered the space we had chosen is not going to work! it's just not appropriate for an exhibition unfortunately. Other options are being discussed, and decisions will be made at the next meeting, tuesday at lunch time. everyone PLEASE try and make it if you can...It'll be a short meeting, but important I think! Would be great if anyone who missed the meeting could catch up to formulate opinions and be prepared to make a decision on the space on tuesday!!
Other items discussed were whether or not to have a guest speaker, and it was decided that it is unnecessary!!!
I don't want to give away too much but we also made some decisions about what format the catalogue chould take!
All-in-all a very decisive meeting! Thansk guys!

Projection Work Of Neil Browne -

- Initial Proposal -
27th March 09
Neil Browne

For the exhibition I wished to propose two text based ideas;
The first, will involve the proposed first year students (four) we hope to get them to help us cater for the guests on the night by supplying wine and finger foods throughout the room like waiting staff. I hope to print some of my abstract written quotes in white text onto black t-shirts front and back and have them wear them for the opening night. They will look uniform, and be walking, interactive artworks.
Some proposed examples for t-shirt texts :
“Have you sat in my chair?” , “Or used my brush?” etc…

For my second idea, I will require an projector (either over-head or digital) and a computer

For over-head; I will print out my text onto black acetate in white text (or vice versa) and project the full 20 line text on to the interior of the roof within the venue.

For Digital; I will assemble the proposed text onto a dvd and using a computer and projector safely set up I will project the same text on to the interior of the roof within the venue.

Hi, now that the buzz is dying down, all of the members of the MAKEANDDOSOICITY would like to thank the people that helped us and all the people that came to the exhibition. We are so greatful and never thought in our wildest dreams that it would be this good.

But this week is just the begining. Keep in contact, there will be more events in the near future.
